Efficiency levels in electric power generation are generally not very high. Roughly speaking, for every electricity unit consumed, two are released in the environment mostly as thermal energy. Besides a huge economic loss, this low efficiency also causes serious thermal pollution of the environment. Considering that current global production of electric energy exceeds 25 trillion kWhs annually, the size of the problemn is enormous. This paper attempts to give on overview of the most important steps that have been taken to address this sad situation. The development of power plants that combine the gas cycle of gas turbines with the steam cycle of steam turbines produces a substansial increase in efficiency, reaching 60 percent levels, as compared to 35 to 40 percent in conventional stations. Many electric power utilities currently operate combined cycle power plants, or are planning its construction in the near future. Indonesia has at present also several in operation. Cogeneration, the production of electricity together with heat, very attractive to industry in general, produce even higher efficiecncies up to 80 percent or more. Many industries presently operate power plants that even combine cogeneration with combined cycle systems.
