Particularly, since the arrival of the Net and the global partnerships in the past decade, many people in Indonesia have become more and more familiar with a plethora of English expressions which they encounter on a daily basis. One language process which is related to the use of English in an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) society is the so-called code switching, a natural process of automatic switching from a language to another in a particular discourse. This study intends to reveal the incidence of Indonesian-English code switching in two Indonesian female magazines, Femina and Kartini. Two editions of Femina and Kartini published in March 2011 are the subject of the study. Evidently, code switching is frequently found in the data. Out of the total 76449 words investigated, there are 947 cases of English code switching in the form of 513 different code switches. With a focus on four major research areas (structure, grammar, register, and semantic), this study reveals that English code-switching in the Femina and Kartini corpora occur mostly in the form of intra-sentential switches (95,1%) and in the grammatical category of noun (87%). It is also found that English code switching (CS) is highly frequent in the registers of fashion and beauty of the two magazines. Following the semantic classification of Roget’s International Thesaurus (1992), the study further discovers the dominance of English CS in the categories of food, clothing, cooking, and beauty, domains which are familiar and typical to women’s life. The relatively numerous occurrences of code switching in this study lend support to the MLF (Matrix Language Frame) hypothesis proposed by Myers-Scotton (1992, 1997) and it suggests that there is conformity between Indonesian and English syntax on the level of the interchangeability of words, phrases, and clauses. Finally, both the register and the semantic classifications conducted in this study turn out to be a sophisticated means to study Indonesian to English code switching more comprehensively and conceptually.
