Pain is explored as a significant issue in the lives of persons experiencing chronic and debilitating illnesses as well as their caregivers and family members. Although medicine has evolved to provide pharmacological and effective procedures to reduce or manage pain, there remains a special interpersonal bond between sufferer and comforter. Emotional and interpersonal dimensions of the pain bond are discussed in the context of stressors associated with living with chronic pain.
