Isi artikel
In this issue of The Journal Duvanel et al1 evaluate the long-term effects of neonatal hypoglycemia on the physical growth and neurocognitive function in small-for-gestational-age preterm neonates. They retrospectively group the neonates according to their glycemic status, and they prospectively evaluate physical growth and psychomotor development serially. The incidence of hypoglycemia (73%) is generally higher than has been reported previously in a similar population. Based on their data, the investigators suggest that recurrent episodes of hypoglycemia are strongly correlated with physical growth deficits and persistent neurodevelopmental delays. They recommend repetitive glucose monitoring and treatment of hypoglycemia for the small-for-gestational-age infant in the neonatal period.
