Isi artikel
Unlike cancer in adults, childhood cancer is rare. In the United States fewer than 7000 new diagnoses are made annually in patients younger than 15 years of age. With so few cases, there are few clues about etiology. Several of the more common types of childhood cancer are diseases of the very young. For example, 50% of patients with neuroblastoma are diagnosed before the age of 2 years and 80% by age 4 years. Neuroblastoma is rarely diagnosed in children older than 10 years and is more rare still in adults. The young age of onset of this and other tumors has focused interest on events that occur before conception, during gestation, and shortly after birth.
