Atma Jaya Catholic University has an English proficiency test known as AJELT (Atma Jaya English Language Test), a kind of TOEFL Preparation Test held by Atma Jaya Catholic University Centre of Language Teaching. Starting from the 2008 batch, all freshmen are required to take the AJELT to plan a corrective action in case the AJELT score is below expectation. Based on the AJELT score data of 2008 batch to 2010 batch, the percentage of passing students is decreasing. As for the 2008 batch, the passing percentage is 56.91% and keeps on decreasing for the 2009 batch and 2010 batch with the percentages of 53.94% and 49.77% respectively. This research is aimed to measure the effect of English proficiency (specifically reading and listening) to the AJELT score. This effect measurement aims to list out factors that are affecting the AJELT score. This research also measures the effect of AJELT score to writing ability as one of the English proficiency criterion not being measured by the AJELT. The method used in this research is SEM with PLS (Partial Lease Square) approach. The research shows that reading and listening abilities do not affect the AJELT score, and so with the AJELT to writing ability. Based on each construct to the listening variable, the factor that has the most effect is Text Material (L5) with a correlation of 0.7647. As for the reading variable, the factor that has the most effect is Prior Knowledge (R2) with a correlation of 0.8283. In writing variable, the most affecting factor is Long Term Memory (W9). The correlation between listening ability to AJELT is 0.178785 and the correlationbetween the reading ability to AJELT is 0.725171. There is no correlation between AJELT and writing ability. |
