Isi artikel
The medical school of Newcastle, New South Wales admitted its first students in 1978. Approximately equal numbers of students have been selected each year on the basis either of ‘marks alone’ (e.g., top 1% of achievers) or on the basis of certain cognitive and non-cognitive personal qualities from a pool of applicants with lower academic marks (e.g., top 10% of achievers). Evaluation of the performance of the selected students within the course has shown that there are tangible benefits associated with the alternative, multi-faceted selection process that would be expected to be reflected in the graduate body. This paper describes the basis on which the current admissions procedure is founded, and the perceived benefits, in terms of the graduating students’ characteristics, of both the admissions procedure and the non-traditional curriculum followed by Newcastle medical students.
