Abstract
Code switching is commonly used by many teachers in Indonesia when teaching English. Nevertheless, the switching is often perceived negatively and sometimes seen as a sign of incompetency in the second language. This study mainly aims at describing code switching used by two English teachers in the classroom at Tarakanita II kindergarten School. The data was collected by recording these teachers while they were teaching. The recording was transcribed and then analyzed to identify the types of code switching, the functions commonly served by the teachers’ code switching and the classroom context which initiated the teachers’ code switching. The findings show that speakers employed code switching to organize, enhance and enrich their teaching activities. This study may add some new perspectives in understanding the teachers’ code switching and is expected to enrich language teaching literature, especially teaching young learners.
