Isi artikelBegging is one of the social problems in Indonesia often referred to as a result of poverty. There is a common belief that begging is the option taken by people living in poverty to maintain their survival, because begging is an act associated with self-humiliation. However, the number of beggars lining up on the streets of many Indonesian cities is constantly increasing. There are anecdotal reports that some beggars go to streets, not because they have no other means of survival, but for other personal reasons. In this connection, there are assumptions that economic poverty itself may not necessarily be the root of the problem. This research aims to look at the psychodynamic aspect of this matter. The purpose of this research is to identify the cognitive dynamics of beggars when they decide to become beggars. Using a qualitative approach, there are two subjects involved in the study (35-60 years old), who have been begging for more than one year as their only means of survival. It was found that the decision to become a beggar evolves in three phases: the emergence of trigger events, the process of self-helplessness, and affirmation.
