Abstract
Preterm birth is the main direct causes of neonatal death. Preterm birth rate in Indonesia is still high. The aim of the present study is to identify risk factors associated with preterm birth in Atma Jaya hospital. This study is a case-control study. Cases were defined as all pregnant women with preterm birth (<37 weeks) in Atma Jaya hospital, from January 1st, 2004 to December 31th, 2008. A total of 226 cases and 200 controls were enrolled in the study. Logistic regression analysis was used in the analysis. Several significant risk factors of preterm birth were identified: mother's education (OR = 0.598), primigravida (OR = 3.952), prior preterm birth (OR = 5.144), obstetric factor (OR = 6.075), maternal systemic disorders (OR = 4.011), no antenatal care (OR = 2.601), and multiple-gestation births (OR = 13.198). Conclusion: the main determinant of preterm birth in patients with middle-low economic status is multiple-gestation births. Antenatal care plays an important role in reducing the risk of preterm birth.
