Isi artikel
The sharp rise in grain prices around the world since last year has aggravated the already severe food crisis in developing countries. In addition, humankind faces the prospect of major global shorfalls of food on a long term basis. Here in Japan, meanwhile, the food self-sufficiency ratio fell from a level of 70% in 1961 to 40% in 1998, and in 2006 slipped to 39%. This means that Japanese people rely on imports for 61% of the calories they consume.
