It all started on December 6 last year, when Kumamoto Prefecture Governor Shiotani Yoshioko declared before the prefectural assembly that she would not be seeking a third term. Following this announcement, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, the opposition Democratic Party of Japan, and a parliamentary faction of DPJ and Social Democractic Party of Japan members in the prefectual assembly each approached me about running in the gubernatorial election.
