Isi artikel
By the time the sequencing of the human genome was completed 6 years ago, expectations were huge that this knowledge would soon have an impact on our ability to treat disease, nowhere more so than in oncology. The genome sequence itself amounted to no more than a parts list, with minimal clues to function. Fortunately, however, at about the same time a powerful technology for rapidly probing the biologic roles of genes became available in the form of RNA interference. The coming together of these two breakthroughs, which make up part of what is often referred to as "functional genomics," is finally yielding results that may lead to major developments in the treatment of cancers. Scholl and colleagues recently described such results.
