This book largely consists of essays commissioned to distinguished scholars and experts by the Gender Working Group. Each contributor was asked to explore the issues related to science, technology, and gender in her own area of expertise. In particular, they were asked to give examples where technical change had differentially affected the lives of women and men. The topics chosen by the Gender Working Group reflected an early decision to focus its work primarily on the basic needs of people in rural areas of the developing world (a few essays, however, do also explore the wider impact of new technologies on the lives of women in both urban and rural environments and the relationship between gender and science in the developed world). |
