Isi artikelThe outer are of East Nusa Tenggara comprises mainly the islands of Sumba, Sabu, Rote and Timor. The region has a short rainy season (3-4 months) with harsh soil conditions. Because of its spoor economy and the dependency on traditional agricultural activities, the lives of the people are vulnerable to nutrition and health problems. The following paper reports nutrition status and health conditions of people in the district of South Central Timor based on a study in 9 villages of the Pollen subdistrict. Forty five households were sampled to discover coping strategies for maintaining food supply in emergency situations, knowledge of food and nutirition, food consumption, food behavior, patterns of consumption, energy and protein requirements, nutrition status and community health, diseases incidence, and efforth to solve problems of nutiriton and helath. It was found that although selling agriculture products (including livestock) to get cash to buy food occurred in emergency situations, there was substantial evidence that off-farm acitivites were a major alternative. Using a number of energy and protein was mainly from cereals and beans. Using national indicators of desirable dietary patterns it was found that the variablity of food sources was narrow, with the score of 48.6 out of 100, emphasizing only a few cereals serve as sources of energy. Using anthropometric parameters to measure energy and protein requirements, we found there was an average consumption of 1744 calories for energy and 47.4 g per day for protein. This consumption of energy is less than the national standard requirement, which is 2200 calories. Measuring the amount of energy and protein that the people in villages in Pollen consume, we found that the average consumption was only 1650 calories for energy and 34.6 g per capita for protein. The proportion of households that were deficit in energy and protein were 20% and 66.6% respectively. These nutritional conditions affect the health of both children (30%) and adults (41.12%), including a correlation with a high incidence of infectious diseases, and have affected them for a long preiod of time. Systematic efforts to solve the problems at the level of government policies, development sectors, and community, both for immediate purposes and for long term targets are needed.
