Isi artikelDiscusses the extent of ethical guidance within the UK information profession, focussing on the role of codes of ethics and guidelines for ethical conduct. The key role of universities in teaching professional ethics as part of all students’ library and information science (LIS) studies is identified, as is the students’ own responsibility for educating themselves. But it is concluded that the greatest onus is on the professional associations. The different approach to supporting members on issues of professional ethics adopted by the former Library Association (LA) and Institute of Information Scientists (IIS) is demonstrated by analysis of their published Code and Guidelines. Weaknesses in the former’s prescriptive and proscriptive Code are contrasted with strengths in the latter’s aspirational Guidelines. The present status of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals in this context is discussed, and key recommendations are made.
