The role of the Malay language (Indonesian )between 1900 and 1942 in Surabaya can be seen in two periods, the first from 1900 to 1928 and the second from 1928 to 1942. In these two periods the role of malay as an element in the struggle against colonialism is very marked. It's not surprising that many leaders of movements turned to literature. For through literature they could bring their readers a new vision, of a world of progress and national freedom.
