The aim of this paper is to introduce a small part of the concept of discourse analysis: the analysis of language from the point of view of its usage. Two of the principles of discourse analysis, the principles of locality and of analogy, have a very close relation with the teaching of language skills, especially the writing skill. The locality principle lays down guidelines for the reader, so as not to create a context wider than necessary to arrive at an interpretation as close as possible to that intended by the writer.
