Einstein's formula for the equivalence of mass and energy is derived from the invariance of the "length" or, rather, its square, of the momentum-energy four-vector of a particle under Lorentz' transformation from its rest frame of reference to another that is moving with a constant velocity relative to it. Correspondence principle is used to determine the value of that scalar which represents the square of the momentum-energy four-vector. A glimpse of the man whose name the formula bears, the postulates on which he based the theory leading to the formula, and his belief as to how a new idea occurs to a person, are mentioned as the writer goes through the derivation.
