We are witnessing at present the spreading use of Indonesian in families that a generation ago would have spoken a regional language. The author relates this to a growing urban middle class. He then shows a similar phenomenon which happened in the Chinese communities of Java in the nineteenth century going hand in hand with their rise as bourgeoisie. He concludes that in the history of Indonesia, the use of Indonesian in the family has spread as more people enter the middle class, which has benefited most from modernization. Indonesian equals modernization, implying the marginalization of those people who do not master Indonesian in the modernization process.
