Isi artikelIn seeng literature as a social institution, it's clear that artist, work and audience are all social in nature. All are deeply influenced by economic, political and social controls, and even if they reject their contemporary social order, that rejection is also defined by the social situation they stand over against. Applying this to English literature, we can see how around the mid 18th century a general tendency towards viewing the writer as a public spokesman for the widely accepted norms and values of the day gave way to a more pragmatic role, forced on the writer by a society whose values and norms were fast becoming very different from those of the artist. The artist as prophet, warning and instructing, becomes the dominant model in literary development.
