Reviews the development of mediated professional business information provision, from the fee-based business information services of the 1980s to the present and future focus on refining, clarifying and classifying online services that are potentially directly available to end-users. Considers the range of influences that have brought about this shift including: the changing industrial structure; growth in internet use; financial and other pressures in libraries; and changes in government policy. Concludes that the library and information professional’s core skills remain valuable in the present changed economic and learning environment.
