The limitations of an epistemological approach to development are noted in terms oj its treatment oj the topic of death, as well as in terms of its treatment of magical thinking and animism in adult religious beliefs. An existential framework indicates that people have a special relationship with others that is not characteristic of their relationship with objects. This relationship provides a personal grounding in the social world that enables confident action in an uncertain world.
