Abstract
In the globalization era, mastering English is a must. It becomes a compulsory subject to learn by elementary schools until senior high school students in Indonesia. The difficulties in learning English as a foreign language for Indonesian students lies in
learning grammar for it is different from that of Indonesian. Learning English as a foreign
language is difficult because our language does not have tenses (Abudira, 1992).Grammar might be a difficult subject to be learnt but it is necessary to be mastered. Batstone (1994) states that mastering grammar is very important in learning English as a foreign language.
Reported speech is one of the most difficult grammatical items to be mastered by
the students of Senior High School. Students sometimes have difficulties in mastering
reported speech regarding the forms and functions of reported speech in English. Goodell (1987) states “many non-native speakers of English, even at advanced levels, exhibit great difficulty in learning English reported speech”. This study emphasizes on reported questions only not on the other types of reported speech which had been done by other researchers before. They analyzed the three types of reported speech altogether. In this study, the focus was the reported question which was not frequently done.
