Oscar Wilde, was born in Dublin on October 16th, 1854. He was the son of Sir William Wilde, a leading ear and eye surgeon and Lady Jane Francesca Wilde, a succesful poet and journalist. Oscar Wilde was a talented student. He was awarded scholarship to Trinity College Dublin where he studied classics. Later, he was awarded another scholarship from Magdalen College, Oxford University and was able to develop his love for literature. He began an affair with Lord Alfred Douglas in 1891, who became the love of his life, inspired him to write The Picture of Dorian Gray, and leads Oscar Wilde to his downfall. Oscar Wilde was one of the most famed writers from Victorian Era, the era that revolves around the political career of Queen Victoria. She was crowned in 1837 and died in 1901. (“The Victorian Era,” n.d.). One of the rituals in this era was that people visited each others’ home for a formal dinner, to paint, read, and play the piano. In addition, the natural physical beauty was definitely important in Victorian Era. It was lovely for people to have fair skin, rosy cheeks and wears a lacey dress for the balls and dances.
