This study aims at finding out similar nature of Intercultural Sensitivity (ICS) characteristics between Indonesian monocultural work groups and Indonesian-German work groups. The similarity reveals that Indonesians bring along their intracultural experiences into intercultural contexts and utilize them as the basic forms. Theoretically, cultural learning process from within-culture contexts into between-culture ones is possible and would be beneficial for multicultural societies. Exploration on Indonesian basic cultural values reveals notions which support the transformational culture-learning process as well. The study applies multiple methods of work-group simulation, group reflection, and semi-structured interview and analyses them qualitatively. The result concludes that modification process took place between the monocultural work groups and the bicultural ones. Indonesians base their IC characteristics in the bicultural groups on the monocultural characteristics and customize them to adapt with the intercultural demands. |
