Coral reefs are one of our earth's fundamental resources. Because of their rich habitat and large diversity of marine species, coral reefs frequently compared to tropical rainforest. Corel reefs are an important asset for millions of people around the word, particularly for local communities who deperid on these resources for their livelihood. This paper analyzes the identification of coral reefs by using the ALOS satellite data that have high enough resolution. The objective of this research was analyzed the application of ALOS data for supporting coral reefs mapping both for monitoring and inventory. The method used is by comparing the result of ALOS image classification and identification with the result of SPOT image classification and identification, whereas the information extraction of coral reef with Lyzengga (1987) transformation model, that is based on value formation from reflectance or energy reflectance from water bottom. The result of the study indicated that the identification of both the ALOS and SPOT-4 image is seen existence of pattern equation of water bottom distribution, either at coral reefs object or at sand object. The spatial information of coral reefs at ALOS satellite image gives the classification result more accurate, instead of by using the SPOT-4 satellite image.
