Abstract
Breast cancer is the most common malignant disease suffered by Indonesian women after cervical cancer. In most cases, the risks of breast cancer are associated with duration or intensity of either endogenous or exogenous estrogen exposure. Exogenous estrogen exposure on women is commonly elicited from oral contraceptive use. The combination of estrogen and progestin (artificial progesterone) is the most frequently used oral contraceptive type for Indonesian women at productive age (15-49 years old). Oral contraceptive as a factor that increases the risk of breast cancer is still controversial and requires further investigation. We have conducted literature studies of this topic and found that there is no significant association between combined oral contraceptive use and the risk of breast cancer, related to duration of use, age at first use, and interval since the last use of combined oral contraceptive, unless other risk factor(s) of breast cancer exist(s). Based on this study, we concluded that estrogen and progestin in combined oral contraceptives are not proven to promote breast cancer on women despite the statement of their carcinogenic effect on human breast tissues. Nevertheless, the conclusion attained is based on mere epidemiologic studies. We suggest further investigation about this topic considering the high trend of oral contraceptive use among Indonesian women.
