Bacterial pneumonia causes morbidity and mortality. Guidelines addressing the management of pneumonia have been developed with the aim of improving care and outcomes. This article addresses many of these management issues with reference to particular patient groups; discusses the importance of stratifying risk and immediate emergency department management; examines the response to therapy and follow-up; and discusses the evidence behind present practice and possible future directions for pneumonia management with the advent of new biomarkers.
