The demography of aging was not an especially hot topic two decades ago. The 1987 program of the Population Association of America had no sessions primarily devoted to aging. The PAA's journal, Demography, did not publish in that year any articles primarily on the topic; two on life tables were as close as it came. In 2007, by contrast, Demography published nine articles dealing primarily with aging, the elderly, or adult mortality and disability-about a fifth of the journal's total.
