Generating Humor through Flouting the Gricean Maxims and Creating Incongruity in the Punchline in Garfield Comic Strips Series Language of humor in a comic is produced by the author. He is carefully and intentionally flouting the Gricean maxims and creating incongruity in the punchline. His intention in flouting the Gricean maxim is to invite the reader to find a funny end from the incongruous punchline. This qualitative study is aimed at finding out the four types of Gricean flouted maxims and the three types of incongruity in the punchline in Garfield comic strips series. The author intentionally flouts the maxims and creates the incongruity in the punchline for the purpose of humor. This study finds that the flouting maxim of quality and incongruity based on logical proposition are the highest strategies used by the author to generate humor. In a normal conversation, when people flout the Gricean maxims, it will not automatically raise the alarm of incongruity. On the contrary, in the language of humor, when people flout the Gricean maxim in their communication, it automatically raises the alarm of incongruity.
