Abstract

This research re-examine the results of previous researches which find that group member’s attraction toward prototypical ingroup member is affected by perceived prototypicality of prototypical ingroup members of the group. In this research, that assertion was tested in crowd setting. This research also examine the theoretical premis of SIM (Social Identity Model of Crowd Behavior) which stated that in a novel situation, crowd members tend to attracted by prototypical ingroup members. 114 freshmen students from Faculty of Psychology of UNIKA Atma Jaya participate in this research as experimental subjects. The result confirms that crowd member’s attraction toward prototypical ingroup member is affected by perceived prototypicality of prototypical ingroup members. Also confirmed in the result is SIM’s thesis that the novelty of the situation affected crowd members’ attraction toward influence of prototypical ingroup members. Further analysis also found that this phenomenon only manifest itself when prototypical ingroup members have a large discrepancy in prototypicality. Topic suggestion for further research are : using other form of social category as a basis for eliciting social identity among crowd members, and conduct further researches with field experiment or naturalistic observation design to enhace the external validity and applicability of the results.
