The most striking feature about children learning their first language is the fact that language learn- ing is an integral aspect of entering into the ac- tivities that make up the daily life, first of the family, and then of the wider community. There is no clear separation between learning language and using language to learn about the world and the ways in which members of the culture make sense of it in their interactions with each other (Wells, 1986).
