Isi artikelContinuing a service begun in 1926, The Modern Language Journal publishes an annual survey of doctoral degrees granted in foreign lan- guages, literatures, cultures, and linguistics and in foreign language education in the U.S. Since 1981 the compilation has appeared regularly in the autumn issue. The compilers contact by mail each doctoral degree-granting department in lan- guages, literatures, and education and request individual chairpersons to identify in writing the author, title, and director of each dissertation completed during the calendar year. The chair- person is also asked to indicate the type of doc- toral degree granted (DML, EdD, PhD).
