This study was conducted during the period of 1997-1998 on a doctoral programme and focussed on the learning and development of a small group of adult learners as they progressed through their training to become fully competent professionals. As a lecturer and academic programme director at the then Police Staff College, it was apt for me to research those who had recently joined the Police Service and had to undergo a period of formal training before they could actively engage in the practice of policing.
