Some 20 years ago I was fortunate to be a participant on an extensive Inner London Education programme on Education and the Urban Environment. Involvement in the programme included time spent in the Planning Department of an Inner London Borough. As a youngish teacher, this experience made me acutely aware of the social and economic context of many of our inner city schools and of issues about economic regeneration and the physical environment – the problems, but also the opportunities. I went back to my own school in South London with a new way of looking at the context, but acutely aware of the limitations of my own knowledge and understanding of the local community, its needs, its experiences and its richnesses
