The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) invited the National College for School Leadership (NCSL) to lead the review of the existing National Standards for Headteachers which were introduced in 1997 through the Teacher Training Agency (TTA). Since that time both the national educational context and the role of head teachers has changed significantly. The task for the NCSL is an important one, including reviewing, updating and revising the existing standards, so that they address both aspiring and serving headteachers and all stakeholders who work with them. Perhaps of more importance is to examine the challenging role of contemporary headship.
