Headlines in the national press abound with how schools are unable to cope, or to pick up danger signals, associated with the emotional lives of their pupils. The Samaritan Organisation claims that every day two young people under the age of 26 years commit suicide in the UK. The Mental Health Foundation suggests that one in five pupils display some sign of poor mental health, while one in 10 needs professional help. Meanwhile the Department of Health has reported a rising incidence of mental illness among under 10s (TES 12.2.99). There is also continuing concern about the high level of expulsions from schools in the UK in recent years. These facts make it imperative to find a means of dealing with emotions in schools - those felt and exhibited by both pupils and teachers.
