By 2020, information and communications technology (ICT) will be cheap and virtually invisible. Michio Kaku (1997) considers the price of a chip will have fallen from hundreds of pounds to a penny, and that the internet will have wired up the entire globe and evolved into a membrane consisting of millions of computer networks, creating an ’intelligent planet’ holding all of human knowledge. The impact of such developments on what we now call secondary schools will be incalculable.
