The new education legislation the Labour government introduced within weeks of coming into power continues the relentless pressure on schools to show results, whilst tightening the hold central government has over them. But teachers should not despair. The education reforms need to be seen alongside the significant reforms that are taking place within our democratic systems - reforms which have the potential to put new heart and drive into our public services and the professionals who work for them.
