September 11th will not go down in history as the date of a conference about the teaching profession. Later in the day it transpired that one kind of transformation ( that of teacher status) had been under discussion just as another transformation - that of the international political landscape - was actually occurring.Yet September 11th it was that the Institute of Public Policy Research (IPPR) and the General Teaching Council (GTC) were joint hosts of a conference conceived to look at teaching beyond current dilemmas over recruitment and retention and to consider the difficult, slippery issue of status.
