Isi artikel
The narratives that comprise the majority and dissenting opinions of certain U.S. Supreme Court cases can be viewed as attempts at the semiotic mediation of major social conflicts in the United States. The two cases analyzed in this paper address the issue of racial segregation. In representing differing social "voices" and reinterpreting the role of the law, the narratives address deeply divisive social conflicts. The structure of the narratives at once reflects these divisions and yet restores semiotic order, at times allowing opposing voices to be heard, yet imposing an outcome in an effort to resolve conflict.
