Isi artikelAnthropological studies of tricksters tend to be thematic and categorical, focusing on aspects of character that contrast with a society's notions of "normal" behavior. Using a discourse-focused approach to Kalapalo trickster stories, and paying particular attention to quoted speech, this article demonstrates the utility of thinking of a self as narrativized. The Kalapalo trickster's self is "scattered" in that his action is non-repeated, with unanticipated outcomes, and that he is emotionally detached from his goals. I argue that this superficially "disorderly" scattering is developed through emergent narrative devices so as to emphasize the relationship between incohesion and creative experimentation, by reminding Kalapalo listeners of the positive aspects of unanticipated consequences and of the need to be emotionally detached from goals.
