Isi artikel
The structural features of semantic couplets and their discourse functions are examined in extended passages from the Popol Vuh (Quiche), Zinacanteco (Tzotzil) ritual prayers, and Ixil narratives. Couplets are defined by paradigmatic elaboration of target lexemes in parallel syntactic frames, focussing attention on the replaced lexeme, presupposing the repeated thesis/frame, commenting on the replacement's meaning, and generating forward movement of narrative topics. Cohesion is achieved mechanically by thematic repetition, disjunct couplets, reiteration of paired replacements, and hierarchically through functional complementarity of thesis and replacement, presupposition, and linking of complementary functions (e.g., thesis: replacement) via cross-membership of specific constructions. The analysis has direct implications for the interpretation of Mayan hieroglyphic texts.
