Isi artikelBy examining a Spanish and a Moch6 version of a well-known European fairy tale, we see how language choice can affect the style, structure, content, and cultural meaning of a narrative performance. Variations in the elaboration of plot elements and in the inventory and relationships of characters reveal the degree of divergence in the underlying cultural premises of the two languages. By contrast, rhetorical and narrative devices used by the speaker suggest that two unrelated narrative traditions have converged in a fundamentally Mayan style.
