Isi artikelAlthough particles have been traditionally viewed as unlikely candidates for borrowing, Mayan languages have borrowed heavily from Spanish particles (conjunctions, connectives, interjections, and discourse and conversation elements such as hesitation fillers, and tags). Studies of code-switching indicate that particles are frequent locations for switches, pointing to a possible origin for the borrowings. Examination of Mayan texts reveals that the Spanish particles match up with native particles to function as discourse markers to help structure discourse.
