Isi artikelTwo genres of Chuj (Mayan) discourse are compared in their exploitation of the syntactic possibilities provided by the grammar. The genre 7ab'ix ne~8 divides the tense/ aspect markers into two sets and uses set switches and adverbs to mark boundaries within the discourse. Noun phrase structure reflects information flow, but the "Given Ergative Constraint" (DuBois 1985) is moderated by the tense/aspect driven ergative split in Chuj. Couplets within 7ab'ix cluster at the opening, the close and the climax. Prayer, on the other hand, uses coupleting as its primary stylistic device. Constraints on parallelism rule choice of tense/aspect, noun phrase structure, and directionals, but not adverbs. Subordination is common in prayer, but not 7ab'ix. Though both genres share a syntax, the canons of each yield radically different patterning of the constituent elements.
