Isi artikel
Framing particles are a pervasive feature of Itza Maya discourse. They serve cohesive and contrastive functions as they format the text in discourse chunks, resulting in the parallelisms so often noted in Mayan discourse. Primarily deictic, these particles signal relations to spatial and temporal context, relations to prior and succeeding discourse, and the speaker's intent to highlight or background information. An analysis of Itza Maya narrative reveals how these particles function to structure discourse, and how speakers manipulate discourse markers according to communicative intent.
