A sa/sV reading is here proposed for T533, the front- facing Ahau, in non-day-sign contexts. Codical and inscriptional' evidence is invoked in the argument for this syllabic value. A particular case, that of the Balam Ahau title, is considered in detail. Proceeding from this analysis is a new reading for the title, one which links it directly to Xibalba, the Mayan under- world.
