Based on a universal system of kinship notation, this paper shows how a kinship system can change through time. Such change, based on kin rules (see Lounsbury 1964), is explained by comparing 'systems of rules (not the actual kin -terms themselves), thus revealing relationships among kin terms which otherwise must remain poorly defined and only fractionally understood. Systematic comparisons of rules make sense of the changes in kin reference by clarifying the manner of change.
